Feral Warp Wolf

Just finished up the first of my puppies - Mr. Chompy.

In the hands of pKaya, this guy is a slippery, toothy, one-dog wrecking crew.  So long has he doesn't die, pKaya is always in the game.

Shifting Stones and Warping Wolves

Journeyman league underway at Dogs of War Gaming in Palm Bay, FL (my favorite local gaming store) and I've chosen this opportunity to start up my Circle Orboros stuff.

Somewhat ironically, because of the way Journeyman leagues work, I'm only using about half of what you see here.

Lets start off with what I've got painted. . .

Two units of Shifting Stones.  Painted in what is the beginning of Autumn tones.  There's just not a ton I can do with these to show off those colors.

Feral Warpwolf.  This fella is pretty much bog-standard.  One hand got a little twist to give the model a little more movement.

Ninja Stalker!  A fairly substantial conversion on this Warpwolf Stalker.  It was good to bust out the sculpting tools again.  Still trying to decide if its worth the extra greenstuff to match up the arms (one is the Pureblood arm).

Wraith Engine Complete

I've added the green glow, so I'm sticking a fork in this one.  I am, in principle, satisfied with the results.  It was a great project to polish my NMM gold skill/formula.

P.S.  I just bought another one of these monstrosities. . .

I'll get you my pretty, and your little teddy bear too!!

Lots o' Khador 3

The hits keep comin'

Meet Mr. Behemoth

And his eminence eIrusk

And what Khador army would be complete with a unit of Widowmakers?

Lots o' Khador 2

Moar Khador!

The Old Witch - for the most powerful, ancient demi-god in the faction, would you tolerate being referred to as the Old Witch?  I'm thinking no.

And here's her littel pall Scrapjack.  I'm glad I finally built this, because until I did I could never locate the thing's head.  For the record, its that dangly thing between his legs. . .

The little rock spire on the base is there to buttress the rickety construction of the model.

And lastly, the ubiquitous Kayazy Assassins.  Again, there's a full unit, but just a handful are shown here.

Lots o' Khador 1

Just finished this commission, and all the figs are tightly packed away in their brand new foam beds and in the hands of their owner, so I'm throwing up the pics.  Took about a month and a half, on and off.  There are a lot of pics, so I'm going to put them out in batches.

First off, lets start with a Unit, a Warcaster, and a Warjack:

Iron Fang Pikemen (there's a full unit, these are just a handful):

And here's the UA:

Prime Irusk:

And finally, the Spriggan:

Next Kayazy, Old Witch, and Scrapjack

Wraith Engine - Metals Finished

Finally managed the finishing touches on all the NMM, and I've attached the big guy to his base.  Still have the Cryx-y glow to add and some more details for the base, but its close!

The NMM gold is pretty simple:
-Citadel Desert Yellow
-A couple applications of Flesh Wash Glaze (Flesh Wash/Matte Medium mix)
-Reapply Desert Yellow
-Citadel Bleached Bone
-More Flesh Wash Glaze

Wraith Engine Inching Along

Another progress update.  I don't usually post these kind of WIP pics because I churn through minis pretty hard, but in this case I've had a big army project I've been working on, and so have only been able to work on this in bits and pieces.

This happy coincidence means I actually time to take pics at various stages.  Here, I've highlighted the steel and purple, but both have glazes coming too.

Steel so far is:  Rainy Gray (Reaper Master Series), Black Glaze, reapply Rainy Gray, Rainy Gray/White 50/50.

Purple so far is: Hexen Purple (Vallejo), Warlock Purple (citadel)/Hexen 50/50, Warlock, Warlock/Tentacle Pink 50/50

Also, I'm trying some two-brush blending on this project.  Its interesting so far. . .

Wraith Engine Progress

Inching along on this one. . .

 Basecoated and glazed

And since you're looking at this post, why don't you click on over to check out my Crucible site?

Crucible is a WM/H and 40K wargaming event in Orlando in March 2013. Last year (when we were WM/H only) we gave away the Grand Prize of a 35 pt. pro-painted WM/H army that you can find elsewhere on my blog. crucible-orl.blogspot.com

Bane Lord Taterus and Bane Knights

I actually painted these guys a while ago, but am only just getting around to posting them. With all the fiddly bits and metal, I'm afraid it breaks my theme a little. All the 'fake' NMM tends to break down when its so prevalent. And it took forever to do, too!

This is just a handful of the full unit.  After you've seen a handful of Bane Knights, you've kind of seen them all.

Blood Witches

It took me forever to paint these lovely ladies.  I started the basecoat on them last Fall, and though I've played with them a lot, I've only put a concerted effort into finishing them this past month.  Pathetic!

I must say, I love these models.  A couple of the poses are on par with many faction's caster models, and all of them are festooned in detail - which is one of the reasons it took me so long to get around to finishing them.

Though the color scheme is fairly similar to the studio scheme, its actually just adding red to my already purple-heavy army scheme. I left the eyes white because they're often depicted that way and I was just a teensy bit lazy.

Here's the awesome Blood Hag UA and one of the better single posed unit members:

The Wraith Engine Project

I've professed many times that Legion of Everblight range is one of the finest fantasy miniature lines available, but Cryx is right up there too.  As evidence, I present the Cryx Battle Engine:  The Wraith Engine!

I have multiple comission jobs running right now, but I've had this model sitting in the box for a couple months and couldn't resist putting it together.  Its so cool and evil, that it begs for paint as well as your soul.  Here it is on its hand-crafted cemetary base, but only partially complete.  The complexity of the model warrants a multi-stage painting approach.  I'll be priming and painting the side panels (which attach to the two peg holes above the head)seperately in order to catch all the detail that will be partially obscured once they're glued in place.

Feralgeist - Crucible Grand Prize

Last model!  Last model!

With this last little guy, the Crucible Grand Prize is complete.  He also happens to have been the easiest model of them all to paint.  Gaze in awe at the awesomeness of these awesome steps:

Prime White
Glaze Green
Glaze Yellow/Green
Highlight with dilluted Vallejo White Glaze
Glaze Yellow

Done!  Well, other than the basing, but you get the idea.  Super-useful solo, super easy to paint.  And since I've never looked at the model up close until this project, I was kind of tickled by all the little faces on the surface.

Crucible Grand Prize - Animantarax

Wow, this model is finally finished!  This is the most time-intensive piece I've done in a long time.  All the filigree, color changes, and extra pieces & parts made for a challenging model.

The yellow on the houdah is a bit overwhelming, but I think it makes for a striking model.  If you look carefully, you can see that the actual beast is painted in the same "red back, light-brown belly" scheme as the rest of the warbeasts in the army.

Withershadow Combine

I've had these guys painted up for a couple of weeks, but finally took a day to snap some pics.

Its interesting (to me) to look back on how I've painted my Cryx.  I started out going for gritty and real, and the style has become a little more cartoony and stylized as I've developed more defined formulas for the colors I use.

Also interesting (maybe to others) I've started doing mixing final bright highlights with White Glaze, rather than White paint. I think it gives a little softer gradient when it dries.  We'll see how it develops.

Naaresh

I have to go on record as saying I'm not a fan of this model.  Its way too busy, and the pose could've been so much cooler.  Don't get me wrong, I'm all for detail, but it should have a purpose beyond extra frills.

I painted this model over and over trying to find all the flaps of skin against the embedded pieces of metal, and I still see stuff that needs fixing - what a chore.  And the face is a mess.

I like smooth lines.  Naaresh is anything but.  He's got all this great musculature, but then its completely broken up all the crap sticking in him.  And the weapons, while presented menacingly enough, are not positioned for use.

I love Privateer Press' miniatures the vast majority of the time and I'm very much a fanboi.  I really enjoy painting them, and I would submit that the Legion of Everblight line is perhaps the best fantasy miniature collection available.  But here it very much appears to me that they wanted a Nihilator warlock, and the solution to how to present it was to cover it in more bling.  He must be important!  Look at all his extra stuff!

Anyway, just not very fun. . . but here he is.

Last of the Legion - for a bit

Proteus!

Last of the Legion stuff for a bit.  This is part of an ongoing comission army, and I need to trim down my project list a little (currently 4 projects going), so I can clear some things out.

This guy was fun to paint, but not my favorite.  I really like the model (probably because of a teenage obsession with HP Lovecraft), but the Carnivean body is not the coolest in the range, and the tentacles are fairly uninteresting to paint.

I do like how the tentacles turned out, though.  To me, it looks like a mouthful of earthworms, and I like how disturbing that is.  They were painted thusly:

- Gray Primer
- dilluted Elf Flesh/White Glaze mix
- Black Glaze
- Pink Glaze
- White Glaze for highlights
